Business Coaching: Step Up Your Game And Beat Your Competitors

By businesscoaching | July 3, 2008

If you’ve been running your business for a while, complacency can easily set in.  Often you’ve been so busy doing the work that needs to be done that you haven’t lifted your head up and taken a fresh look at your business.

And during this time perhaps your competitors have been on their toes and started to gain more of the market or a new competitor has come along.  With your competitors driving their business ahead, you may find in time that your business starts to suffer.

So, before you get to this stage and to be sure that your business is moving ahead the way you want, I encourage you to check out what your competitors are doing.  Although this can sometimes feel quite daunting when you see what they’re doing and realising that you’re starting to slip behind, it can also be seen as an opportunity to step up your game.

What do I mean by stepping up your game?  Well perhaps there’s areas of your business that you need to make improvements to.  For example, have they introduced new products  or services and you keep meaning to think about it but haven’t got around to doing it.

Now I’m not suggesting that you follow exactly what they’ve done.  I suggest that you take a close look at your competitors and use this information to decide what you’re going to do.  Ultimately I want for you to come up with ideas so that you beat your competitors and gain the extra business thats available.

I suggest that you pick say your top 3 competitors and first of all decide what it is specifically that you want to learn about them.  Then go and start researching.

Here’s some areas that you may want to consider:

  • Any new products and services they’re offering, and what ideas can you come up with?
  • How easy it is to do business with them and how you can make it easier for people to do business with you?  i.e. opening hours, friendly staff, payment options, easy accessibility, contact details found easily.
  • In what ways have they streamlined their operations for more efficiency?
  • How are they reaching their target market and how can you do this more effectively?
  • What can you easily see that they’re not doing well and you could promote more of in your business?
  • How easy can their business and website be found when searching in Google?  If you’re a local business, this is one area that you could beat them so that when potential clients are searching for a specific business they find you first.

Once you have some ideas, this may be just a few or a lot, just remember you don’t have to put them all into practice at once.  Prioritise them and draw up a plan of action so that you know what you’re committed to doing and by when.  Then most importantly start taking action on these items.

Discover how business coaching can help you to stay ahead of your competitors.
