How is your self-talk affecting your actions?

By businesscoaching | July 9, 2008

I’m sure you’ve heard plenty of times how your self-talk impacts you, especially your level of success. Obviously in my line of work I would say its something I’m very aware of particularly when working with clients. And I like to keep a check on it myself.

However, I was quite surprised a couple of days ago when a very good friend mentioned that I’d used a number of negative words while we were talking. Although not particularly negative, I’d ended the conversation with, ‘I better plod on’. Her response was ‘Do you want to plod on or how about striding ahead?’

The minute she said those words I was struck by two things. First that I’d been saying to myself recently I need to plod on with a specific project and guess what, plodding is exactly what I’d been doing. Secondly, that hearing the word ’striding’ felt so much more invigorating.

It was a great reminder to me that the words we use when we’re talking to ourselves have such a great impact on us, not only mentally and emotionally, but also in the actions we take.

I then wondered how many other words I was using that was potentially holding me back and I hadn’t even noticed them. Sometimes we just don’t notice these things for ourself and its helpful to get feedback from others.

Anyway, I decided that my thinking and self-talk might need an overhaul. So, I decided to use hypnosis to change any negative thinking or self-talk. Its an easy way to uncover the stuff buried deep in our unconscious mind.

Is it working? I think so. It definitely feels relaxing and I’ve noticed that I want to ’stride’ ahead at the moment. It might just be that I noticed myself using those words and changed them. I’m sure the hypnosis is helping though, as my mind feels more positive and I’ve suddenly noticed that I’m coming up with many more ideas.
